1. What is
massage?
Massage is the manual (use of hands) or mechanical
(use of machines or apparatus) manipulation of a part of the body
by rubbing, kneading, pressing, rolling, slapping, and like movements
for the purpose of improving circulation of the blood, relaxation
of muscles, and other benefits to body systems.
2. What are some of the
benefits of massage?
Physically and psychologically a massage:
• Relaxes muscles and relieves muscle spasm
• Reduces tension that can cause headaches or other aches
and pains
• Enhances circulation and speeds the removal of metabolic
by-products and toxins, allowing oxygen and nutrients to reach tissues
• Increases joint flexibility and range of motion
• Increases awareness of the mind-body connection
• Fulfills the emotional need for touch
3. What can I expect at my
first massage?
You will be given a simple, short medical questionnaire
to complete. This lets us become more informed regarding any health
issues such as surgeries, skin or spinal conditions, or any areas
that you feel need more attention than others.
You will then be asked to remove any jewelry and disrobe
to your level of comfort. Your therapist will instruct you as to
how to lie on the table and will leave the room while you do so.
You will cover your body with a sheet and relax until your therapists returns from washing her hands.
You will be draped with the sheet at all times and
only the area being worked on will be exposed. A choice of music
is provided to enhance the mood of relaxation.
4. Is there pain associated
with a massage?
A therapeutic massage should not hurt. If too much pressure
is being applied, you can ask your therapist to adjust it to a touch
more relaxing.
5. What should I do while
I am getting a massage?
You can talk to the therapist but it is more
restful for you if you are relatively quiet during your massage,
allowing your mind as well as your body to relax.
6. How will I feel after a
massage?
You may feel drowsy and a little
light-headed (many of our clients nap during the session). This is
the body’s normal “cleansing” response to the loosening
of accumulated toxins trapped in the muscle tissues.
After
the initial “floating” feeling, you will begin to feel
energized and lighter, almost hollow. Movements will be with ease
and offer more flexibility. It is also normal to feel some tenderness
in areas that were extremely tight prior to massage. Don’t
worry it will subside very quickly.
